NATIONAL ENGLISH WOMENS COUNTY CHAMPIONS

A very exciting few days at Stoneham GC, near Southampton resulted in Essex bringing home The Lady Katharine Cairns Challenge Cup for only the fourth time in its history. Essex were last at County Finals in 2015 and had last won the event in 2012.

The practice round on Thursday 14th afternoon was followed by a chilly but bright Friday morning and Essex played a Bucks team who are regulars at County Finals. Unlike The East Region qualifying event all the teams are an unknown quantity in terms of strength and how they set the team up.

Bucks had a strong team and most of the matches were very tight with the new foursomes duo of Megan Henry and Emily Dixon going to the last and securing half a point to give Essex an overall 3.5 to 1.5 win. Every half point can be crucial in the event of count backs.

Next up our old regional opponents Kent with a very experienced team. The two foursomes pairings of Alex Sparrow /Zoe Mclean-Tattan and Ciara Rushmer/Amy Knotts had resounding wins with Katy Yates winning her singles match for another win 3 to 2.

Saturday morning saw another bright and chilly start with opponents from the North Region – Cheshire. They had prevailed in their regional qualifying against the mighty Yorkshire and Lancashire. Ciara and Amy had another foursomes win with Megan Henry and Katy Yates bringing home 2 more singles wins to give us another 3 to 2 win.

Notts were our next opponents and they were in the same position as Essex having not lost a match. With some superb golf the Ciara/Amy foursomes duo did it again, joined by Charley Hatley/Katy Yates and Zoe Mclean-Tattan and Alex Sparrow winning their singles matches to make it a 4 to 1 win.

Our final match on Sunday morning was against Somerset. This was a very nervy first nine and a win for Essex did not look likely but after studying the current position of the Notts v Bucks match we could see that, if things stayed the same, we had just about done enough and would win on countback. However, our foursomes duos of Ciara/Amy and Charley/Katy fought back and when the later won their match we had secured the title and then went on to win the match 3 – 2 overall to remain unbeaten.
