Munro Foursomes Final 2024

The phrase “a game of two halves” is often used by golfers. The Munro Foursomes final, played at Chelmsford Golf Club between Benton Hall and Romford was certainly one such match.

Both teams had a slightly nervy start. Benton Hall were conceded the first hole when Romford’s ball bounced over the green and out through the fence. A half on the second was followed by a run of wins for Benton Hall putting them 5 up at the turn. Holes 10 to 18 saw Romford begin to strike back, reducing the Benton Hall lead to 4 when they stopped for lunch.

Although rain had been forecast we stayed dry all morning, but the first hole after lunch began in a shower which fortunately didn’t last long. E-K Brown and Rachel Casey of Benton Hall made another charge, winning several holes after halving the 19th, to go 7 up after 27 holes. Despite what the score might suggest the match was very close with only one shot either way dictating a win or a loss.

At this point both players and spectators thought an early tea was imminent, but Chloe Reeks and Karen Miles of Romford found another gear and due to some impressive shots to the green and clutch putts the 7 hole advantage disappeared hole by hole until they were all square after 35 holes. A halved final hole meant a sudden death playoff. Down the par 5 first we went with two good drives, two good approach shots, two chips to the green, an excellent putt by Karen which finished close to the hole but E-K Brown then sank the only birdie putt of the day to clinch the match.

Players and caddies enjoyed a well earned cup of tea and cake following the trophy presentation by Nicola Thomas, County President.

Many thanks to Debs Wolton  for refereeing the match, to Chelmsford Golf Club for their hospitality, to the players for an exciting and at times nail biting match and to the supporters who enjoyed a match played in very good spirit.
