GIRLS’ COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2023

Essex Girls’ County Championship

On a rather dreary, cold and windy day, 12 girls played at West Essex Golf Club in the Girls’ County Championship. Restricted to girls aged 18 or under on 1st January, the championship is played over 36 holes.

In the morning round the numbers were reduced to 11, with illness striking one of the girls after thirteen holes.  The morning round is also the qualifier for the Justin Rose Daily Telegraph Junior Championship. Both the best gross and net scores qualify and this year Maia Hattrell was the winner in both categories with a gross 77 (on countback) and net 69.  Ciara Rushmer was second in the morning with a gross 77 and Zoe McLean-Tattan third with a gross 78. All to play for in the afternoon round.

After a speedy lunch, the girls were back out on the course, playing in slightly better conditions although the strong wind was a factor.  Ciara and Zoe came in with a gross 77 and 78 respectively, putting them on the same combined score of 154, with Zoe winning on countback. Maia had another great round with a gross 78, just a point behind on a combined score of 155. However, she had the best combined net score winning the Net Trophy.

We are very grateful to the Past and Present Essex Lady Captains for their continued support of the championship and their trophy for the best girl aged under 15 on 1st January, this was won by Zoe.

A massive well done to all the girls who took part, especially those who had played 36 holes the day before in a schools competition, and congratulations to our new champion, Zoe.
