WE BEAT THE RAIN AT COUNTY FINALS!

I switched the alarm off at 7.30 and lay there listening to the rain bashing on the window and thinking I'm in for a soaking! The Boyce Hill website showed the course as closed and my heart sank.  But by the time I had showered and had breakfast the rain had stopped and the sky looked better.  When I got to Boyce Hill the course was open the sun was trying to come through and I knew the golfing gods were on our side! No rain but oh the wind!

There were fours finals:

Gold KO - Tess Prudence 14 (Stock Brook) -v- Jackie Sleet 13 (Chelmsford)

Silver KO - Cherry Clarke 19 (Stock Brook) -v- Liz Maynard 19 (Braintree)

Bronze KO - Lesley Hitchcock 23 (Stoke By Nayland) -v- Anne Howes 23 (Stock Brook)

Hunter Foursomes - Kate Gadsby 9 /Amy Knots 10 (Chigwell)  combined 19 -v- Sue Boom 11 /Rosie Boyce 21(Chelmsford) combined 32

There was a wonderful air of excitement as the players waited to tee off..  Our County Captain (Nicola Thomas) started each match and the spectators clapped each player as they took to the tee making the occasion special.

I had hoped to whizz round the course in a buggy but as you can imagine the course was very wet from overnight rain so no buggy for me!  I could see that all the matches were being played in the spirit we have come to expect from Essex Ladies with spectators clapping good shots no matter who made them.  I have to thank our two referees Philippa Deman (Past County President) and Linda Dennis who took two matches each and spent the day rushing backwards and forwards to make sure all was running well!

All the matches were hard fault all going to the last few holes - Tess Prudence and Cherry Clarke took their matches at the 16/17.  Lesley Hitchcock and Anne Howes went up the 19th with Lesley Hitchcock taking match, stopping the Stock Brook clean sweep!

The Hunter Foursomes match was a real ding dong with Sue Boom and Rosie Boyce (you can just about see Rosie over her trolley) fighting hard against the very strong pair from Chigwell.  Against the odds they took Chigwell to the 18th. Where Chigwell took the match 1up and Chigwell took the title. Sue and Rosie will be back next year I'm sure!

The presentations were made by our Lady President (Janice Hazeldine) the winners and losers being cheered!  A super day's golf really enjoyed by everyone and not one drop of rain - we were lucky girls!

I would especially like to thank Boyce Hill for hosting the matches, the course dried our very quickly and was in great shape the fairways and greens were exceptional.  I am also very grateful to Hilary Willett the Boyce Hill County Delegate who was there to welcome the players and give course information before they set off, I could not have managed without her.  Thanks also to Scott Clark the Boyce Hill general manager who made sure the tee ran well and we have everything we required - a really super Club!

Here we all are left to right looking very wind swept but dry!

Me, Kate and Amy, Lesley, Liz, Rosie and Sue, Tess and Jackie, Cherry and Anne
