On a sunny but blustery day junior girls met to play the finals of the Hitchcock Trophy and the Hunter Foursomes. The Logan trophy for lower handicap girls will be played on October 19th as Evie Stone won through to two finals.
The Hitchcock trophy was being played for by Isis Marquis from Garon Park and Elsa Reason from Chelmsford. Both girls played well and were still all square after 6 holes. Elsa won the next two holes but Isis pulled it back to all square again after 10. Elsa then won 3 holes, but Isis persevered to win them all back by the 17th. Both girls found ditches on the 18th and halved it so extra holes were needed. Elsa secured the match with a par putt on the second extra hole. The girls should be proud of their performance with only a putt separating winner and runner up.
The Hunter Foursomes was contested by Nicky Lee and Evie Stone from The Rayleigh Club and Zoe Kelly and Darcie Williams from The Burstead. The format is an adult and junior pairing. The Rayleigh pair started strongly and were 2up after 3 but Darcie from the Burstead pulled off an amazing shot out of a ditch to put the ball 3 feet from the pin and win the 4th hole. The impetus from this spurred them on so that they were 2up after 10 holes. While play ebbed and flowed between the two teams The Rayleigh were unable to make inroads into The Burstead’s slender lead, so the match concluded 3 and 1.
Whilst tea and cake was being enjoyed back in the clubhouse Karen Charles, County President, presented the prizes. Janice Hazeldine, a former President, who instigated the Hunter Foursomes competition presented that prize.
My thanks to Lee Cocker and the staff at Benton Hall for their assistance in making this a very enjoyable and positive experience and to all the supporters who came to watch.
