The final Junior event of the year, the Girls' Autumn Meeting so nearly didn't go ahead, after storm Babet drenched the course, and days of frequent rain followed. However, the magnificent greens staff at Boyce Hill made a special effort to get the course open and playable for our girls to compete in their final open. I have to firstly thank Boyce Hill for their amazing hospitality, nothing was too much trouble, the staff and members were all so friendly and helpful and the food excellent, it just disappeared from the girls plates!
After heavy rain and difficult driving conditions, all the girls made it to the course and the weather gods were kind to us as the rain stopped at 10.00 as the first girls teed up, and the sun came out by lunchtime, although not enough to dry the course out. Watching from the sundeck, we witnessed the tee shots on the 18th par 3 disappear when they hit the green, bringing a whole new meaning to a plugged ball.
Despite the conditions, the girls all played well and the scores were surprisingly good. Winner on the day with 38 points was Ellie Quarmby of Chelmsford, with Elsa Reason and Emily Howells in second and third. Best gross score was Chelsey Duffy, playing in her final event as a junior, she will be missed next year!
The award for the most improved junior was presented by our President Nicola, to Maybel Brooks, to recognise the outstanding progress made over the last twelve months.
Well done to all the winners and to every girl who took part on a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable day.
