THORNDON PARK WIN THE 70TH MUNRO FOURSOMES FINAL

The teams enjoyed almost perfect golfing weather today at the Munro Foursomes Final at Thorpe Hall Golf.  Liz Gibson and Gill Haysham from Chelmsford and Erin Earl and Georgia Cater from Thorndon Park teed off at 8.45 for the first round of the 36 hole final.

Thorndon Park took an early lead going 2 up very quickly at one point they were 4 up! Chelmsford managed to pull it back to 3 at the end of the first 18.  Chelmsford came out all guns blazing after lunch with Liz Gibson sinking a couple of super long putts they managed to pull it back to just 1 down and it looked liked any side could take the Shield. But Erin and Georgia proved a very strong paring, played some great golf and finally took the Munro Shield 4 & 3!  Well deserved winners.

It was very fitting that we were at Thorpe Hall for this the 70th final, as Thorpe Hall is where the Munro Foursomes started  Olive Munro was a member at THGC and her husband Stuart thought that the County First Team which did well in single matches could do better in foursomes and decided that a County wide KO foursomes competition off scratch would give them some practice!  So in 1950 the first Munro Foursomes competition started!  Olive’s daughter June Robinson was there to see Thorndon Park receive the Shield.

My grateful thanks to Thorpe Hall for hosting the match, to Josie Williams for giving her time to referee the match so well and to all the supporters that turned out to watch  - it really made the day special.
