ESSEX LADIES COUNTY GOLF ASSOCIATION
COMPETITIONS – INFORMATION SHEET

 

1. INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS

Entry forms and guidelines for the Silver Shield, Silver Trophy, Bronze Shield, Harris Bowl and Munro Foursomes are sent to clubs in July for the following year’s competition.  The draw for leagues, according to the number of entries, is done at the Delegates’ meeting in September.    The Rules and Conditions of Play for all competitions are sent to all team captains, is included in the ELCGA Yearbook, and is available on the website at www.essexladiesgolf.org    Entry forms for the Ladies/Juniors competitions - Hunter Foursomes, Logan Trophy, and Hitchcock Trophy are sent to clubs in December.  Details of the Ladies/Juniors competitions can be found on the website or or in the current ELCGA Yearbook.

 

No player shall represent more than one club in any competition.

 

Silver Shield
Clubs may enter 2 teams 
Teams of 5 players – no handicap restrictions. 
Played off scratch. 
Drawn League. 
Home and Away Matches.

 

Silver Trophy
One team per club  
Teams of 5 players - Handicaps of 10+. 
Played off scratch. 
Drawn League. 
Home or Away Matches.

 

Bronze Shield
One team per club. 
Teams of 7 players - Handicaps of 19+. 
Played off scratch. 
Drawn League. 
Home or Away Matches.  

 

Harris Bowl
One team per club. 
Team of 5 players - Handicaps of + - 30 (ladies with a higher handicap must play off 30). Any lady playing in the Harris Bowl is ineligible to play in the Silver Shield/Silver Trophy/Bronze except if she has a handicap of 19 or over and is required to play in her club's Silver Shield/Silver Trophy/Bronze team where she may place twice in total.  A lady who plays in the Silver Shield/Silver Trophy with a handicap below 19 is ineligible to play in the Harris Bowl. 
Played off difference of Handicap as per CONGU. 
Drawn League. 
Home or Away Matches. 

 

Munro Foursomes
One entry per club.   
Two players, who may be changed at any time during the competition, shall represent each club.    
Knockout competition - played off scratch.   
Preliminary rounds played on fixed dates over 18 holes on neutral courses.  Final played over 36 holes on neutral course.   


County Individual Knockout Competition
Individual knockout tournament off handicap for players in 3 divisions, Plus to 15 (Gold), 16-24 (Silver), 25-36 (Bronze).  Maximum of 64 competitors per division – taken in order of receipt until the maximum is achieved.  Draw to take place at the February Delegates Meeting.  


 2. OTHER COMPETITIONS 

County Championships 

Ladies’ Championship
Scratch competition open to Handicaps 13 and below.  
36-hole qualifying – best 16 to qualify for match play.
Senior Ladies’ County Championship
50+ years at date of entry. 

18-hole qualifying – best 16 or 8 to qualify for match play, depending on entries.
Girls’ Championships

Handicaps 29 and below. 
Scratch stroke-plaucompetition over 36 holes. 
Girls’ Champion under 18 on 1st January of current year
Under 15 Champion – under 15 on 1st January of current year
Handicap prizes also awarded.

 

Open Meetings
18 hole stroke-play competitions are held for players within the + to 20, and 21 to 36 handicap ranges and also for Seniors (60+).  Scratch, handicap and team prizes are available to play for.  The entry fee also includes a meal. 

The Windfall Trophy
The winner of their club’s nominated qualifying stableford competitions (prior to 31st August) participates in the final held in early October as arranged by ELCGA.  Only one player goes forward to the final, but if the winner is unable to play in the final then the player with the next best score who is available can go forward.

3. JUNIOR COMPETITIONS

Hunter Foursomes – Played off Handicap

a)    Pairs consist of a lady and a junior from the same club – no limit on the number of pairs per club.

b)   Handicap limits:          Ladies maximum of 24, Juniors handicap of 36 or below.

c)    Age limits:                  Ladies aged 25 or over, Junior under 18 on 1st January of the current year.  

d)   Format:                     Foursomes matchplay. Knockout, played off handicap.

                                      Each round is drawn.  Semi-finals and final held on neutral courses 

e) No Caddies.

 

 

Logan Trophy – Played off Handicap

a)  Open to Juniors (under 18 on 1st January of the current year) – no limit on number of entries per club. b)  Handicap limit:    Maximum of 18.4.

c)  Format:              Singles Matchplay.   Knockout, played off handicap.

                               Each round is drawn.  Semi-finals and final held on neutral courses. 

d)  No Caddies.

 

 

 

Hitchcock Trophy – Played off Handicap

a)  Open to Juniors (under 18 on 1st January of the current year) – no limit on number of entries per club. b)  Handicap limit:    Between 18.4 and 35.4.

c)   Format:             Singles Matchplay.  Knockout, played off handicap.  

   Each round is drawn.  Semi-finals and final held on neutral courses. 
d)  No Caddies.

 

Junior Open Meetings

Three 18-hole stroke-play meetings for girls who are under 18 on 1 January of the current year. One stroke-play meeting for girls with handicaps over 30 to be played in conjunction with the Girls’ Championships.
Scratch and handicap prizes.

Meal included in entry fee.


 

4. INTER-COUNTY MATCHES 

1st Team  

The 1st Team is selected following the Ladies’ County Championship and then participates in the East Region Inter-County Match Week playing each of the other five counties on a separate day in one week, usually in June.  The format of each match is three foursomes in the morning and six singles in the afternoon all played off scratch.

If Essex win the East Region Inter-County Match Week they progress to the England County Finals and will play the winners of the five other England regions during the course of one week which is usually in September.  The format of each match is the same as that of the East Region InterCounty Match Week all played off scratch.

Friendly warm-up scratch matches are held early in the season against counties outside the East Region.

 

2nd Team

The 2nd Team plays individual day matches against 3 of the other East Region Counties.   All counties play their third and final match on the same day at the same course. The format of each match is three foursomes in the morning and six singles in the afternoon all played off scratch.

Senior Team

The Seniors Team plays matches against four of the East Region counties, the format is singles match-play against two counties and 4BBB against the other two counties.

A Seniors Team of 4 players is selected to compete in the Inter-Counties Team Championship (10 counties).  The format is singles medal play off scratch with the best three scores counting.

We are also now in the Larson Mulligan Bowl - Seniors League, consisting of Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Middlesex and Essex.  Matches will be played 2 home 2 away and change each Year. Format being trialled for this years is 1 x Foursomes match followed by 4 single matches.  The winner of the league will be the County who have won the most individual games over the 4 matches.

Junior Team

The Junior Team plays the other East Region Counties at Junior County Match Week during August.  The format is 6 singles against each county.
 

A junior team is also selected to play in a Team Stableford Cup against the other East Region Counties. The team comprises 6 players each having a handicap in a set handicap range.  The format is an 18-hole Stableford off handicap, with the best 4 individual scores counting towards the Team Score.
