BRONZE SHIELD FINAL AT UPMINSTER GOLF CLUB, FRIDAY 8TH AUGUST 2008 GOSFIELD LAKE V THE ESSEX
A fine, but breezy day welcomed Gosfield Lake and The Essex teams
to Upminster Golf Club on Friday for the Bronze Shield Final.
The Essex won the toss and chose to tee off first. The County
Captain Janice Hazledine was there to welcome and start each game on
the first tee - a testing Par 3. The players then crossed the road
to continue their games on the well-prepared course. Spectators were
out in force in support of both teams and gave encouragement to the
players.
By the tenth tee, The Essex were beginning to show a winning streak
by leading in 5 of their 7 games. First in on the 14th after a very
good game was Margaret Noakes of The Essex who won 5 & 4, next was
team mate, Wendy Hanford with the same score followed by Heather
Moss with a 4 & 2 win for The Essex. Jacqui Wormall fought back with
a 2 & 1 win for Gosfield Lake but The Essex quickly gained 2 more
wins from Gill Larcombe and Sue Bardell on the 17th
Although both teams realised that The Essex were the victors, the
last pair decided to battle on to the 18th where Cathie Nott of
Gosfield Lake gained their second win to bring the final score to
5-2 to The Essex.
The games were played in extremely good spirits and the players were
all very friendly, congratulating each other on their wins. At the
end of an exciting day the Bronze Team Captain of The Essex, Pat
Free, was delighted to be presented with the Bronze Shield by the
County President, Helen Morgan.
